Biography

Chilean-German soprano Macarena Valenzuela-Volkwein is based in Berlin, where she pursues her artistic career in symphonic-choral music, art song, and opera. Her international experience encompasses leading operatic roles and major concert repertoire, reflecting a versatile artistic profile shaped by her Chilean-German identity, extensive musical training, and broad performance experience across Latin America and Europe.

Her symphonic-choral repertoire includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Bach’s St Matthew Passion and St John Passion, Mozart’s Requiem, Brahms’s A German Requiem, Verdi’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, and Rossini’s Petite Messe solennelle, among other works.

Her operatic career includes leading roles such as Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Leonora (Il trovatore), Violetta Valéry (La traviata), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus), Anna Bolena, and Elettra in Mozart’s Idomeneo. She has performed at opera houses and concert venues across Latin America and Europe, including the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. Her German operatic debut featured the roles of Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello and Maddalena di Coigny in Giordano’s Andrea Chénier.

She studied at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, and the Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona, where she completed a Master’s Degree in Opera Performance. Her artistic development has been supported by scholarships from the Beethoven Foundation Buenos Aires (2009 and 2010), Chile’s National Music Fund (2019), and Fundación Ibáñez Atkinson (2022).
