Biography
The chilean soprano Macarena Valenzuela was born in Santiago de Chile, she began her musical studies at the Izidor Handler Municipal Conservatory in Viña del Mar with the Chilean soprano Nora López Von Vriessen and at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile under the direction of the German soprano Ahlke Scheffelt. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from the Escuela Superior de Canto de Madrid and a Master of Arts in Opera Performance from the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona.
She debuted professionally with great success in the role of Countess Almaviva in November 2008 at the Teatro Avenida de Buenos Aires and received the Beethoven Foundation Buenos Aires Scholarship for young artists in 2009 and 2010. Between 2010 and 2012 she performed in Buenos Aires the roles of Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte), Leonora (Il Trovatore), Violetta Valery (La Traviata), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni) and Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus), becoming a reference of the local opera casts.
In 2013, she was the protagonist of the live broadcast of the Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramírez for Italian radio and television RAI. In 2014 she debuted in the demanding roles of Anna Bolena (G. Donizetti) at the Teatro Avenida for BAL and Electra in the latest production of Idomeneo (W.A Mozart) at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires.
Highlights of 2015 were her participation in the Zurich Gala in Mar del Plata with an audience of more than 20,000 people and her absolute debut in Germany in the roles of Desdemona in Otello (G. Verdi) and Maddalena di Coigny in Andrea Chenier (U. Giordano) in Erfurt Theater and Braunschweig Staatsoper, with great success among the specialized press. In 2016 he debuted the role of Manon Lescaut (G. Puccini) of the opera of the same title for Buenos Aires Lírica and sings the role of Maddalena de Coigny in Andrea Chenier for the Theater of Antibes, France. In 2017 she successfully debuted the role of Tosca in the homonymous opera by G. Puccini at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro.
Her operatic repertoire includes the leading roles of Micaela (Carmen G. Bizet), Governess (Otra vuelta de tuerca, B. Britten), Margarita (Faust, Ch Gounod.), Countess Almaviva (Marriage of Figaro, W.A. Mozart), Donna Anna (Don Giovanni, W.A. Mozart), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni, W.A. Mozart), Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte, WA Mozart), Maria (María de Buenos Aires, A.Piazzola), Mimi (La Boheme, G. Puccini ), Magda (La Rondine, G.Puccini), Liu (Turandot, G. Puccini), Rosalinde (Die Fledermaus, J. Strauss), Amelia (Simon Boccanegra, G. Verdi), Leonora (Il Trovatore, G. Verdi), Elena (I Vespri Siciliani, G. Verdi), Violetta (La Traviata, G. Verdi), Desdemona (Otello, G. Verdi), Anna Bolena (G. Donizetti), Electra (W.A. Mozart), Magdalena de Coigny (U. Giordano), Manon Lescaut (G. Puccini), Tosca (G. Puccini), debuted in important concert halls and theaters of Argentina, Brasil, Puerto Rico, Spain, Italy, France, Holland and Germany.
